What is Online Reputation Management (ORM)?

Whether it be good or bad, praise or insulting, truthful or libelous, a reputation must be managed, or it can grow on it's own into something out of control.  Some people grow a positive reputation unintentionally, simply by doing good deeds and helping others.  Others unjustifiably gain a reputation they don't deserve, via an angry customer or disgruntled co-worker.  In most cases of a negative reputation, it must be tamed and controlled, since, as they say, "perception is everything".

An online reputation is easier to control than most people thing.  The internet can be your friend if you let it, and using the right websites, a reputation can be molded into the ideal image.  While it is hard to make things you don't like disappear, you can change perception by pushing content you don't want seen away from the places people find them, primarily search engines.

Therefore, ORM can be defined as the practice of preserving your positive image on the internet.
